Effect of Aromatherapy Tea Essential Oil (Malaleuca Alternia Cheel) to Decrease Number of Bacterial in Air of the Room

Abstract

Introduction:Aromatheraphy is one of therapy which use a volatile plants called essential oils and others aromatic compound for helthy care, rise a spirit, refreshing and make quiet down. Essential oil generally contains phenol, alcohol, ester, sesquiterpen compound which can give antifungal, bacteriostatic, and bacterisida effects. Objective: to find out the minimum concentration and evaporation aromatheraphy time using tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia Cheel) essential oil in order to have san antibacterial effect in decreasing number of air bacteria colonies. Methods :The method was laboratory observational with nutrient agar as media before and after tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia Cheel) essential oil evaporation with variation of concentration 1%, 2%, and 3% v/v and also variation of time during 40 minutes, 80 minutes, and 120 minutes. Result: The result was concentration of 3% had the highest antibacterial effect with decreasing number of air bacterial colonies 64,28% and the time of evaporation of 120 minutes was the most significant time to decreasing number of air bacterial colonies 50,03%. Conclusion: The best concentration of the antibacterial is 3% and the evaporation time of 120 minutes, giving a decrease of 50.03%.
