Maize farmers on the acid upland soil generally relied on the use of chemical NPK fertilizers. Application of an organic soilamendments and P (phosphate) solubilizing microbes in a such soil is expected to substitute the use of NPK fertilizer without reducing the yields. The research aims were to study the effectiveness of biochar, cow manure and P solubilizing microbe applications to substitute NPK fertilizers on the growth and productivity of maize (var. P 27). The research was conducted from January to June 2014 on an acid upland soil at Tamanbogo Experimental Farm, Lampung, using randomized block design with four replications. The treatment consisted of Control (T1), NPK fertilizer at rate of recommended dose (T2); biochar 5 t/ha + 50% of NPK (T3); P solubilizing microbes 5 g/plant + 50% of NPK (T4); Cow manure 5 t/ha + 50% of NPK (T5) and biochar 5 t/ha + P solubilizing microbes of 5 g/plant + cow manure 5 t/ha + 50% of NPK (T6). Results showed that combination of 50% rate of NPK + cow manure gave the best growth and productivity of P27 maize. Plant height was 29% higher, leaf number was 8% more and stem diameter was 47% larger. The yield of dried grain of P27 variety was 12% higher and Relative Agronomic Effectiveness (RAE) was 39% larger, and the B/C ratio was 2.10. The use of NPK could be reduced to a half rate if 5 t/ha cow manure is applied to the soil
