Contrastive Analysis of Consonants in English and Vietnamese

Language is an intensely indispensable tool. It has tremendous functions in communication. One is communicating and conveying messages, thoughts and ideas, feelings, insights, and mental treasures and values of a communicative society. Also, it enhances and strengthens fellowships, companionships, relationships and economic and cultural cooperation. However, language is very indistinct, unclear and confusing. This contrastive linguistics analysis will compare the consonants between English and Vietnamese. Thus, the author synthesizes stored information from various sources to compare differences in consonants between English and Vietnamese in comparative points. Then, some implications and discussion would be drawn for teaching English pronunciation, aiming at helping English learners pronounce like native speakers. The findings show that there are significant differences between English and Vietnamese consonants. This paper is intended to help teachers and English learners review English and Vietnamese consonants to minimize mistakes in their pronunciation, accommodating learners to build their confidence to communicate in L2.

The Assessment of Teachers' Attitude Towards Expanding Intercultural Competence in English Learners in Iran

This study concerns Iranian teachers of foreign languages in general, and EFL teachers in particular who face the challenge of fostering intercultural competence in language learners. More specifically, the attitudinal aspect of teaching culture is considered as a vital element, seemingly less manipulated in Iranian EFL teachers. The study, therefore, aims to understand whether EFL teachers in Iran believe that language teaching is necessarily culture-bound, and how teachers' knowledge about culture and strategies for teaching culture affect their attitudes in developing intercultural competence in learners. To these purposes, the current research comprised a mixed-methods design. So as to collect the required data, a questionnaire was carried out on 50 Iranian EFL teachers who were selected randomly. Among them, 10 teachers were further interviewed to discuss their experiences of teaching language intertwined with culture. Having gathered and analyzed the data, it was found that the participants believed that language teaching is, in effect, culture teaching. The results also exposed that there was a significant relationship between the teachers' knowledge of nature of cultural elements and developing intercultural competence in learners.

The Acceptance of E-Learning Among ESL Primary School Students During Covid-19

The past years have seen a strong focus in Malaysia on the increase of infusion of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in educational institutions to stimulate innovations and strengthen global economic competitiveness. The integration of ICT has transformed the Malaysian education system by reshaping the landscape of education, from teacher-centred to learner-centred education. However, the COVID-19 crisis has changed the landscape of the education system drastically. The educators have turned their focus on online learning as an alternative means to replace the face-to-face classroom. Therefore, this paper focuses on the investigation on the perception towards e-learning among ESL primary school students. This study also determined the level of acceptance towards e-learning. A set of questionnaires was distributed via Google Form to 100 upper primary students in Sibu, Sarawak. The results revealed that the perception towards e-learning was positive, and the level of e-learning acceptance among ESL primary school students was high due to its features of e-learning, such as flexibility, user-friendliness, and the students' attitude towards using as well as the intention to use in the future. It was recommended that teachers should utilize student-friendly digital tools to deliver their teaching and learning materials so that the students, especially at the primary level find it easy and enjoy learning English via e-learning.
