Antibacterial Activity of the Essential Oil From Betel Leaf (Piper Betle L.) Against Streptococcus Pyogenes and Staphylococcus Aureus

Betel leaf (Piper betle L) is a medicinal plant. Its essential oil has antibacterial activity of phenolic compounds and theirs derivatives that can inhibit a wide range of bacteria. Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus is a bacteria that can cause strep throat (pharyngitis). This study was conducted to determine how to obtain the essential oil of Betel leaf green (Piper betle L.) using steam-water distillation method and determine the antibacterial activity of essential oils of betel leaf (Piper betle L.) against the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus using wells method. Betel leaf 5 kg isolated using steam-water distillation of essential oils produces as much as 9 mL, yield of 0.135%, a specific gravity of 0.750 g / mL, and the refractive index of 1.337. The results of GC-MS analysis of betel leaf green essential oil obtained 10 Most compounds are compounds chavicol, eugenol, germacrene D, caryophyllen, eugenol acetate, 2-allyphenol, β-chamigrene, α-cadinene, terpineol, and α-humulene. Based on the test results of the antibacterial activity of betel leaf that the essential oil of betel leaf green (Piper betle L) at the concentration of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% can inhibit the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus, the category of barriers weak to moderate for bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes and weak to strong resistance categories for Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

Activated Carbon From Cassava Peel as Adsorbent of Lead Metal (Pb2+) in the Water

Kulit singkong mengandung unsur karbon sebesar 59,31% menjadi dasar penggunaan kulit singkong sebagai karbon aktif. Salah satu pemanfaatan karbon aktif untuk adsorpsi logam Pb. Pembuatan karbon aktif dilakukan dengan 3 tahap yaitu dehidrasi, karbonasi dan aktivasi. Dilakukan perbandingan karakteristik terhadap karbon aktif yang tidak teraktivasi KOH dan teraktivasi KOH dengan variasi konsentrasi yaitu 0,2 M; 0,4 M dan 0,6 M untuk mengetahui konsentrasi optimal KOH. Pengujian karakteristik karbon aktif meliputi kadar air, kadar abu, adsorpsi iodium dan adsorpsi metilen biru serta uji adsorpsi terhadap logam Pb. Pengukuran adsorpi logam Pb dilakukan menggunakan Spektroskopi Serapan Atom. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa karbon aktif yang diaktivasi dengan KOH 0,4 M memiliki karakteristik  yang paling baik dengan hasil kadar air 3,79%, kadar abu 8,09%, adsorpsi iodium 863 mg/g dan adsorpsi metilen biru 3116 mg/g serta adsorpsi terhadap logam Pb sebesar 98%.

Antioxidant Activities Methanol Fraction of Merung Stem Extract (Coptosapelta Tomentosa (Blume) Valenton Ex K. Heyne)

Research of antioxidant activity of the merung stem (Coptosapelta tomentosa (Blume) Valenton ex K. Heyne) has been carried out. Extraction from the stem of the merung was carried out using solvents namely methanol, n-hexane and ethyl acetate. The results of the phytochemical test on crude extracts of the stem of the merung stem contains phenolic compounds, steroids and flavonoids. The methanol fraction contains phenolic compounds. Antioxidant activity test results with the addition of DPPH (1,1- diphenyl-2-picrylhidrazyl) showed in methanol fraction had an IC50 value of 163.25 ppm. The GC-MS analysis of the methanol fraction of merung stem contained compounds namely 4H-Pyran-4-one, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dhydroxy-6-methyl (13.73).
