An Analysis of Culture Shock From West to East as Seen in Reilly's the Tournament

This article will explore about west and east cultures in the sixteenth century and some issues which occurred when both cultures encounters. The issue that appears when both cultures encounter is that of culture shock. The purpose of this research is to disclose how culture shock happens when both culture, west and east meet. In this research, the writers use concept of culture as the foundation of the research. Further, the analysis is done by implementing Oberg's culture shock theory. To arrange this research, the writers apply library study and descriptive-qualitative method. The data that collected by the writers are in the form of narration and quotation. The source of the data coming from a novel entitled The Tournament by Mathew Reilly. The result of the analysis shows that there are two types of culture that are found inside the novel, visible and invisible cultures. Visible culture consists of cultural artifacts that can be noticed easily. Meanwhile the invisible part of culture is a culture that cannot be noticed easily but it does exist and holds important role in human life. Further, the phenomenon of culture shock proven by the character of Elizabeth who experience all stages of culture shock which are Honeymoon stage (Excitement), Crisis stage (Depression), Development stage (Learning process) and Adjustment stage (Accepting).

Revisiting English Competence at Hotel

This study aims at coming up with English competence at hotel. Going along with that aim, this study focuses on one hotel in Bandar Lampung which has been developing; it is Novotel hotel. This chosen hotel meets with the criteria of hotel targeted. Further, this study was conducted qualitatively because it pursued deep findings dealing with English competence of some duties in hotel, such as reception and handling guest. Besides, questioner was employed to gather data and then interview was also conducted to have more concrete data. At last, this study came up with the detail findings of the average of English proficiency based on the positions. Furthermore, this study formulated the common expressions used to host and serve customers.

The Index of Hero's Power and Nobility in Shakespearean Tragedy Drama: a Semiotic Study

This paper discusses a study that investigates the index of hero's power and nobility in Shakespearean tragedy dramas. Here, the discussion focuses on two works authored by William Shakespeare: "Macbeth" and “Othello”. Objective of this study is to investigate the signs that give index of power and nobility in those two Shakespearean tragedy dramas. The study is done by analyzing Macbeth and Othello in the way of tracing the intrinsic elements or texts of them. All related dialogs and narrations (data source) in these dramas are analyzed in order to disclose the indexes of power and nobility in Shakespearean tragedy dramas. All analyses from each works are compared in order to determine if there are similar indexes or even distinction among those works in depicting the sense of power and nobility as Shakespearean dramas. As the result, it is found that these two dramas contain similar pattern of indexes that lead to the figuration of each hero's power and nobility in the dramas.
