The Relationship Between Young Populations, Life Expectancy at Birth, Number of Doctors and Health Expenditure in Turkey: an Econometric Application

Health care expenditure is a major health policy concern worldwide. To assist decision-makers in finding best policies to manage health care cost, it is important to understand the factors that affect health care expenditure. The objective of this study is to analyze the effects of youth population aged less than 15, life expectancy at birth and doctors providing direct care to patients on the health expenditure in Turkey and how they affect the health expenditure in Turkey during 1975- 2013 period. Augmented Dickey Fuller and Phillips-Perron tests are employed to check whether the variables are stationary or not. Then Johansen Cointegration test and VECM approach are employed to investigate the long-run dynamics and short-run relationship between health expenditure and youth population aged less than 15,(POP15) life expectancy at birth(LIFEX) and doctors (DOCTORS) providing direct care to patients. According to results, A unit increase in the POP15 leads to a 1.99 unit decrease in the HE in the long run, A unit increase in the LIFEX leads to a 0.37 unit increase in the HE in the long run. A unit increase in the DOCTORS leads to a 5.39 unit decrease in the HE in the long run. The coefficient of Error Correction Model, indicating the speed of adjustment to restore equilibrium in the dynamic model and how quickly variables converge to equilibrium, is equal to (-0.160506) and imply that more than %16 percent of disequilibrium in the previous year corrected in the current year

Turkish EFL Pre-Service Teachers' Views on Integrating Various Literary Genres in Teaching English

The aim of this qualitative study was to have a deeper understanding of Turkish pre-service EFL teachers' views on integrating short stories, poems, plays and novels in English language teaching. In this light, the researcher tried to find answers to the research question through students' reflections written after their practice teaching presentations in one of their 3rd year courses. The results were analyzed through content analysis and emerging codes were categorized under themes and sub-themes. This coding process was done by two experienced researchers in the field of English Language Teaching in order to enhance the credibility and trustworthiness of the results. The findings revealed four main categories: teacher feelings, problems in using literature, advantages of using literature and suggestions for using literature in ELT. Among all four genres, the pre-service teachers stated more negative feelings, problems and suggestions, and fewer advantages for using novel in teaching English. Furthermore, students in all genre groups indicated they enjoyed using literary texts in their presentations, and suggested choosing appropriate texts for language learners, giving background information about those texts and combining teaching language structures with literature in classroom activities.

Economic Nationalism and Developmentalism

This paper offers an overall picture of economic nationalism and its relationship with developmentalism – the form of economic and political organization alternative to economic liberalism that involves a moderate but effective state intervention. Why nationalism is a modern ideology; how it is associated with the nation and the nation-state; why it confronts with the West's imperialism. Why, given the competition among nation-states that characterizes global capitalism, there is an “anti” element to nationalism. Why developing countries must challenge the West's ideological hegemony and define a project of economic development that makes them able to compete Internationally and make the catching up.
