Abstract

This research is aimed at (1) knowing the improvement of students' mathematical critical and creative thinking ability using problem based learning model and direct learning model; (2) knowing students' attitudes toward the problem based learning model; and (3) knowing relationship between students' attitudes toward problem-based learning model and the improvement of abilities of students' mathematical critical and creative thinking after the problem-based learning given. The population of the research were all of the senior high school students in Tasikmalaya. The researcher chose SMA N 3, a senior high school in medium level, as the site of the research. The researcher took grades : X1, X2, X3 and X4 as the sample of the research. The instrument of the research was the test of students' critical and creative thinking ability and attitudes scale questionnaire which was used to know the students' attitudes toward The Problem-Based Learning Model. The researcher used a t-test for the data analyses. Based on the calculation, it was concluded that the enhancement in abilities of students' mathematical critical and creative thinking through problem based learning model implementation was better than those who were treated through direct learning model . The students' attitudes toward the problem based learning model shows positive attitudes. The relationship between the students' attitudes with the problem-based learning model implementation and the improvement in abilities of students' mathematical critical and creative thinking showed a significant relationship.
