Shortage of labor in soybean cultivation in upland area is becoming a serious problemin terms of supporting the government program of soybean self-sufficiency. Therefore, application of appropriate mechanical technology is essential, particularly those that are applicable for farmers and farmer groups. One of them is the combined machine for plowing, harrowing, planting and weeding engineered by Indonesian Legumes and Tuber Crops Research Institute (ILETRI), namely MOTASI that can be applied for soybean cultivation in the soil with dry light texture, MOTASI consists of three main components, viz: engine motor (5.5 HP), transmission(4 HP), and the plower, harrower, planter and weeder. The total weight of the machine equipped was about 75 up to 90 kg, depending on the component used. The objective of this study was to test the performances of MOTASI which was conducted at the Muneng Experimental Station, Probolinggo. The results showed that the machine operated fairly well with a capacity of plowing, harrowing, planting and weeding was 23.7 hours/ha, 7.9 hours/ha, 12.3 hours/ha and 11.1 hours/ha, respectively. Superior to previous machine because it is lighter and easier to maintain. This study suggests that MOTASI is technically and economically promising to be applied for soybean cultivation in the light dry soil (Alfisol).
