There are many writing related material in 2013 curriculum, and one of them is to write explanatory text. The writing ability of the current students to achieve learning results score based on the minimum criterion / KKM can be categorized as far from success. This research aims to describe the application of video animation media in the learning of writing explanatory text, to describe the effect of video animation media on the ability to write explanatory text, and to describe students' response towards explanatory text learning lesson which applies video animation as the media. The type of research used is experimental research with descriptive quantitative method. This research can be categorized as true experimental design and is done through two stages; pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was conducted before the treatment, while the post-test was conducted after the treatment.The research findings showed that the ability of eight grade students of SMP N 13 Surabaya in writing explanatory text before getting the treatment in the form of material and video animation media was still low. The evident came from the results of pre-test from control class and experimental class which has not met the minimum criterion / KKM of 78. The mean score of the control class' students is 73,58 and the mean score of the experimental class' students is 63,16. Meanwhile, the result of post-test is used to measure the ability of eight grade students of SMP N 13 Surabaya in writing explanatory text after getting the treatment in the form of material and video animation media. The post-test result of control class and experiment class has increased. It can be seen from the mean score of control class, which is 82,53 and as many as 26 students have achieved scores above KKM. Furthermore, the mean score of experimental class was 84,76 with students whose scores fulfilled the KKM were up to 32 students.The result of the t test obtained is t0 = 3,37 with d.b = 72. It shows that t value is larger than t on the table which is t0 = 3,37 > 2,00. Based on these results it can be concluded that the use of video animation media is positively affecting the learning of explanatory text writing lesson of eight grade students in SMP Negeri 13 Surabaya. It is further proven in the questionnaire results which were given to the students. The result from the questionnaire in experimental class showed that a large number of students chose Strongly Agree (SS) and Agree (S).
