Writing is one of the language skills that must be possessed by a student that can not be obtained naturally, but through the process of teaching and learning. Therefore, the teaching of writing in elementary school need attention so as to meet the target optimal writing skills are expected. Based on initial observations, it is known there are still obstacles in the practice of Indonesian language learning in particular free poetry writing material in class V Elementary School of Surabaya. Such constraints include 1. students have not been able to write poetry free with the right choice of words, 2. students have not been able to distinguish lines and stanzas, 3. students do not have sufficient vocabulary that still often repeat certain words, and 4. students have not been able to write poetry freely in accordance with the defined themes and 5. students still have difficulty in exploring the idea. The fact is supported by the results of student learning in a free poetry writing. As many as 70% of the 30 students who have not yet reached the KKM set at 65. To overcome these problems, Genius Learning Strategy chosen as an alternative solution. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of learning, student learning outcomes are free to write poetry, and the constraints faced during learning and how to solve them.
