Abstract

  Batik is an art heritage from the past culture. The manufacturing of batik may use synthetic dye or natural dye. Natural dye made from nature like animal or plant. Along this time, natural dye which made of plant is often used. This research take laterit soil or named red soil in order to add the availability and type of natural dye that can be used as textile natural dyeing. The aims of this research were (1) determine the outcome of batik dyeing by using natural dye of Tuban red soil on type and technique of mordanting, (2) determine the effect of type and technique of mordanting toward the outcome of batik dyeing by using natural dye of Tuban red soil, and (3) determine the best outcome of different type and technique of mordanting on natural dyeing of Tuban red soil. Method of this research was experimental. Data collected by using observation instrument for the effect of mordant type acetate acid, alum, soda ash and mordanting technique toward the outcome of batik by using natural dye of Tuban red soil including motif clarity, color sharpness, color homogeneity, and color absorption. Batik were produced then observed by 2 expert observers (Fashion Design lecturers) and 23 semi-expert observers (Fashion Design college student) were passed lecture of Perfecting Textile and Textile Design. Data analysis in this research is using two way anava and Duncan test. Analysis result shows (1) the best outcome of dyeing on aspect of motif clarity was on interaction of vinegar acid-simultaneous mordanting with mean score 3.68, the best color homogeneity was on interaction of ash soda-post mordanting with mean score 3.24, the best color sharpness was on interaction of ash soda-post mordanting with mean score 3.40, the best color absorption was on interaction of soda ash-post mordanting with mean score 3.48. (2) There are significant effects on aspect of motif clarity, color homogeneity, color sharpness, and color absorption that respectively obtained significant score at p=0.000 which mean Ha is accepted. (3) Based on higher mean average, the best mordant type is vinegar acid with simultaneous mordanting technique.   Keywords: Mordant type, mordanting technique, batik outcome, red soil
