Abstract

Corrosion is a process of destruction, reduction, or erosion of a material (especially metal) caused by a reaction to the environment. The environmental factors can be in a form of weather pollution, humidity, metal interaction with corrosive substances, etc. The environment caused a corrosion may be kind of water, weather, acid solution, etc. Basically the process of metal corrosion cannot be stopped at all, because it is natural phenomena which will happen if a metal does interaction with the environment. But the process of a corrosion can be prevented controlled of slowed down its rapid by postponing the destruction process, one of them is by using ST37 metal which will be used in this research as wheel support, it is wheel spokes. The research object used in this research is corrosion rapid on ST37 metal by measuring the weight of experimental tools after submersion is done in various media of water concentrating acid in Sidoarjo, Surabaya, and Gresik in the variations of time 1, 2, and 3 weeks along with room temperature. The lack of weight is given back to the formula to gain its lack of lose weight rapid. From this research could be proved that the pH of concentrating acid water in Sidoarjo, Surabaya, and Gresik to the standard and chrome spokes, definitely gave impact because the smaller of pH, the water would be more acid and would cause the corrosion faster to the standard and chrome spokes. The submersion time of 1, 2, and 3 weeks to the standard and chrome spokes also took impact because the longer time of submersion would cause more corrosion. It could be proved by the higest result of the corrosion rapid for the standard spokes which were in concentrating acid water in Surabaya and Gresik which the submersion time was in 3 weeks. The result was 1929,102 mpy. And the highest result of the corrosion rapid for the chrome spokes which were in concentrating acid water in Sidoarjo, Surabaya, and Gresik which the submersion time was in 3 weeks showed the result was the same, it was 964,53 mpy. The room temperature also gave great impact to the submersion process. It could be proved that the corrosion rapid result of the concentrating acid water in Sidoarjo and Surabaya was still below if compared with the corrosion rapid result in Gresik.
