Abstract

This paper discusses the importance of industrial memories in the investigation and preservation of industrial heritage. The city of Rio Grande, object of study in this article, located in southern Brazil, was an important industrial hub for the country. Its industrialization starts in 1873 and goes through several cycles and phases, starting its de-industrialization in the 1960s. Contextualized by changes so that the city witnesses the closure and destruction of several industries and, thus, the loss of part of its industrial heritage. Those memories and narratives about the industrial past contribute to reflect on how the local population relates to these heritage references, and what are the main narratives about local industries. Thee analysed written memories were collected through voluntary contributions and provide relevant information about several companies in the city of Rio Grande, their workers, routines, and products.
