Concepts and Definitions in Foreign Visitor Statistics
The definition used for visitor corresponds to the UNWTO recommendation, i.e. any person travelling to a place/country other than that of his/her usual environment for less than 12 (twelve) months and whose main purpose of trip is other than the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place/country visited. This definition covers 2 (two) categories of visitor, namely:
Tourist is any visitor according to the definition above, staying at least 24 hours, but no more than 12 (twelve) months in the place visited, with the intention of visiting, among others for the purpose of:
holiday, leisure, and recreation
business and professional, visiting friends and relatives, health and religion, other.
Same day visitor (excursionist) is any visitor according to the definition above, staying less than 24 hours in place visited (including cruise passenger, i.e any visitor arriving in a country by ship or train, not staying in an accommodation available in the country)
Concepts and Definitions in Hotel and Other Accommodation Statistics in Indonesia
is an establishment which uses a building especially prepared to any person to stay, eat and obtain service as well as other facilities against payment.
is an establishment which uses a building or part of building especially prepared to any person to stay, eat and obtain service as well as other facilities against payment, and it has fulfilled the requirements as a star hotel which has been stated by the Regional Tourism Agency. The special characteristic of hotel is having restaurant under hotel management.
Non Star hotel
is an establishment which uses a building or part of building especially prepared to any person to stay, eat and obtain service as well as other facilities against payment, and it has not fulfilled the requirements as a star hotel, but it has fulfilled as a non star hotel issued by Regional Tourism Agency.
is an accommodation service establishment especially for adolescent in the framework of tourism activity and broadening of knowledge or experience.
is an accommodation service establishment for newtemplate which is conducted by private by using part or all of his/her house (against payment)
is an accommodation establishment in the open-air by using tent or trailer as a place to stay, including caravan.
is an establishment other than mentioned above, such as inn.
Average worker per establishment
is the number of workers in accommodation establishments (in accordance with its classification) divided by the number of establishments (that is included in that group).
Average worker per room
is the number of workers in accommodation establishments divided by the number of accommodation rooms (in accordance with its classification).
Average guest per day
is the number of staying guests in hotel/accommodation per day calculated based on the number of guests stayed during the year.

Hotel and Accommodation
Primary data are based on survey conducted by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) using VHT-S questionnaire on a monthly basis and VHT-L questionnaire on an annual basis.
Foreign visitor data covers all foreign visitors directly arrived in Indonesia through the airports, ports and land. Indonesia has 93 ports of entry covering the whole area which comprises 65 ports, 24 airports and the rest through land. Four main airports are Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta), Ngurah Rai (Bali), Polonia (Medan) and Sekupang (Batam).
Hotel and Accommodation
Monthly. Data that is collected consists of room occupancy rate and average length of stay covering all star hotels in 20 provinces of tourism main destination.
Annually. Room occupancy rate and average length of stay data is collected from all star hotels and sample of non star hotels. Number of accommodation, average worker and visitor per day is collected from whole accommodation establishments in Indonesia.
