Abstract

The study had been conducted at the SMP Negeri 1 Kintamani in order to find out the contribution of Open-Ended problem solving oriented instructional model towards critical thinking ability and biology learning achievement of the students. This study was conducted based on Post-test Only Control Group Design,involving all students of class VII of SMP Negeri 1 Kintamani in 2009/2010.The samples were taken randomly by dividing them into 4 different classes with the total number of 148 students. The data were collected by using Critical Thinking Competency test and biology learning achievement test. They were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics, as well as Multivariate Analysis of variance used to test the hypothesis.The independent variable of the study wasan Open-Ended problem solving oriented instructional model and a conventional model, while the dependent variable was a critical thinking ability and biology learning achievement. The results indicated that : (1)There was a significant different critical thinking ability and biology learning achievement of the students joining an Open-Ended problem solving oriented instructional model and those joining a conventional model with F value= 17.754 and p<0.05, (2) There was a significant different critical thinking ability and biology learning achievement of the students joining an Open-Ended problem solving oriented instructional model and those joining a conventional model with F value= 16.911 and p<0.05, (3) There was a significant different biology learning achievement of the students joining an Open-Ended problem solving oriented instructional model and those joining a conventional model with F value=21.107 and p<0.05.Based on the findings, the results of the study indicated that the Open-Ended problem solving oriented instructional model could improve the students critical thinking ability and their biology learning achievement.
